Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser. When she was a
child, she was already a fervent performer who would recreate TV commercials
for her family's entertainment, but she eventually decided to focus her
energies on dancing. After studying classical ballet for 9 years at Spain's
National Conservatory, she continued her studies under a group of highly
acclaimed dancers. She realized what she wanted to do at the age of 15 when she

contract she was offered secured her roles in Spanish television shows , as

of film. Cruz made her debut film in 1993's The Greek Labyrinth (The Greek
Labyrinth). Then she briefly made an appearance in Framed (1992) in a Timothy
Dalton thriller. The Oscar-winning Belle Epoque (1992) was her third film. In
it she played one of four sisters who were seeking the affection of a handsome

Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. Cruz continued to add films to her
list of credits, growing by three to four per year. Soon Cruz was the most

lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a
huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). It all
changed in 1998 when her film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998)
received her the title of award for the Best Actress Goya. Cruz made a few more
attempts at English-language films, but her biggest international success was
Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999), in which she played an unchaste , but
very well-meaning nun. Cruz was suddenly in high demand both on the Atlantic as
well as the west coast, since the film garnered numerous awards and honors. The
American comedy Woman on Top (2001) which was her subsequent major project, is
