Patricia Velásquez
Creativity goes beyond the boundaries of
film, canvas, photographs and other media. It also acts as a catalyst for
philanthropy, charity and activism. Award-winning model, actress, and
history-making supermodel, a fervent philanthropist, a conscientious activist
as well as a writer and loved mom Patricia Velasquez applies an eternal
creative spirit to everything she does. Whether it's appearing in blockbusters
like The Curse of La Llorona or launching the Wayuu Taya Foundation and
participating in the UNESCO Board. No matter what, she achieves major strides
by drawing on instinct and carefully paving her personal pathway. She says,
"I see my career as a long ladder." "I took every single step
up. It was amazing to do this, as there has been longevity. I didn't stop
moving, just sat with my head down. The analogy is directly related to the
experience of forming. The author was born in Venezuela but growing up in
France and Mexico after which she moved to Venezuela after a couple of years.
In South America, her parents worked in education before moving their family to
a cramped apartment without running water and no elevators. Patricia took 15
flights of stairs up with heavy buckets to supply water to the building. In
between studying engineering and a rigorous dance program and work, she was
determined to help the family however possible. The commitment she made to her
family members, which was the most important factor that helped her rise to the
top of the fashion industry, led to her being scouted for modeling in Milan.
She recalls, "When they asked me to go to Italy I replied"If I can
send 30 dollars a month back Venezuela and it's worth it since that would cover
the entire building's water'." Patricia's success represented an important
moment in fashion when she brought industry attention to South America for the
first time. After becoming "the first Karl Lagerfeld model ever
photographed" She went on to appear in editorial spreads and
advertisements for the front of Chanel as well as Dolce & Gabbana. The
world was abuzz with her presence, she was a part of Oprah as well as Ford
Models' "Supermodel of the World" contest , as well. Not to mention
that she graced the pages of Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Claire, and many others.
